Types of varnishes – glossary of finishing effects

Lackarten

In this article, we present the most important types of varnishes and their applications. This is a short glossary of finishing effects that will help you choose the technique for the effect you want to achieve – and we will also suggest which options are more environmentally friendly.

Varnishing is one of the most common ways to enhance printing. Not only does it increase the durability of materials, but it also gives them a unique character – from an elegant gloss to surprising tactile effects. Choosing the right type of varnish can completely change the perception of a project – both aesthetically and functionally.

Dispersion varnish – functionality and ecology

Water-based varnish, also known as dispersion varnish, is the most basic and safest solution. It is applied to the entire surface of the sheet, usually in one of three versions: glossy, matte, or semi-matte. Its great advantage is its neutrality—it does not significantly change the color or texture of the paper, while protecting it from dust, moisture, and abrasion.

An additional advantage? Dispersion varnish is an environmentally friendly solution – water-soluble, fully biodegradable, and easy to remove during recycling. The perfect choice if you care about simplicity, durability, and ecology.

Types of varnishes: UV – a flash that catches the eye

This type of varnish provides a spectacular shine, much stronger than the water-based version. Applied selectively or over the entire surface, it creates a “premium” effect – especially when combined with a matte background. Most commonly found on packaging, catalogs, and invitations.

Why do customers choose it?

It is worth remembering that UV varnish is not as environmentally friendly as dispersion varnish – it is more effective than ecological, so it is best to use it sparingly and in moderation.

Soft touch paint – a touch that makes a difference

Velvety to the touch – reminiscent of peach skin or suede. Soft touch varnish is primarily a sensory experience that evokes associations with luxury and premium quality. It is increasingly used in designs that are meant to be memorable – for example, on book covers, elegant brochures, or wedding invitations.

When combined with UV varnish (e.g., soft touch on the entire surface + UV spot varnish on the logo), it creates a particularly striking contrast. The good news is that more and more manufacturers are also offering eco-friendly versions, including water-based options.

Hybrid varnish – one print, many sensations

This technique combines different effects in a single process. Hybrid varnish allows you to combine contrasts – gloss with matte, smoothness with texture, light with shadow. The effects are multidimensional and very expressive, making it ideal for exclusive projects: premium packaging, catalogs for luxury brands, limited series.

Advantages of hybrid varnish:

Due to the complexity of the technology and the use of UV varnishes, this will not always be an environmentally friendly choice – although with the right choice of paper and design, it can be a compromise between effect and responsibility.

Types of varnishes – summary

Types of varnishes – the choice depends on what you want to convey: subtlety and care for the environment? Go for a dispersion varnish. Strong shine and a “wow” effect? UV will be perfect. Softness and sensual contact? Choose soft touch. And if you want to surprise – go for a hybrid.

Remember that printing is not just an image – it is also a form of communication. And the right varnish can make your materials really stand out. If you don’t know what to choose, get in touch. We will help you find the best solution.
